Ancient Egypt
Our topic this term is Ancient Egypt. We've found out all sorts of interesting facts about how the Egyptians lived and their way of life!
Did you know that pharaohs and other important dignitaries were mummified? This involved removing all important organs, drying the bodies out and then wrapping them in bandages to prevent them from rotting. We particularly like the part where we found out that they used to remove the brain using a hook; fantastic!!!!
We've also made our own papyrus paper with our name on in hieroglyphics and we're currently making papier-mâché scarab beetles so watch this space for pictures; you will be amazed.

Ever Fancied being a Traffic Warden?
Some of our Year 6 children were recently given the opportunity to be Traffic Wardens for the afternoon; they were even given uniforms!
In an effort to keep our children safe as they walk to and from school, the West Yorkshire Road Safety Team asked if we would help them put warning notices on cars that had parked inconsiderately. This included cars obstructing the pavements, as children then have to walk on the road to get past.
Everyone had lots of fun giving out the tickets and helping others to understand how to make our environment safer.
Landscape Watercolours
As part of our Art work this term we used watercolour paints to create some amazing mountain landscapes.

A local art group who use our classroom on an evening were very impressed with our efforts!
Samba Workshop
It was a very cold, wet and windy day in Garforth but we were transported to the warm, sunny climes of Brazil when one of the music teachers from Garforth College came to do a Samba Workshop with us. We used claves, tambourims, surdo drums, agogo bells and gansas (shakers) to create rhythms and rhymes based on our World War II topic. Everyone had lots of fun whilst learning about the layers of sound in Samba band music and we had the opportunity to play at least two of the instruments.
As a follow-up to this activity we practised our literacy skills by composing a piece of descriptive writing about the session. Some of our work is displayed in our classroom.

Say NO to Bullying!!
During Anti-Bullying Week Year 6 designed posters to encourage people to 'Say No to Bullying'. We had lots of class discussions about why bullying happens, how we can stop it or deal with it if it should occur.

World War II
Our topic this term has been World War II. We've read poems and stories about the war, including Goodnight Mister Tom, and looked at lots of interesting artefacts such as gas masks, ration cards and old radios. We are very lucky because in a few weeks some of Garforth's more senior residents who were involved in the war are going to come and talk to us about their experiences; we can't wait!
Here are some of the pictures we made illustrating the many bombing raids which took place over our country, as well as some of our poems.

Blitz Poem
Lights that are gleaming search
the sky
Overhead planes fly past
Now the war has begun
Demolished houses crumble away
Our shop has managed it through
Nazis bombing streets and towns
Sirens screech thunderously
Bombs destroying
Lights are off in every house
I wonder if it will ever end
Tightly shut shelters for the night
Zzzz!!! Some people sleep through it
By Chelsea
Crazy Blitz
Bombs covering Britain's floor
Rising higher than houses nad more
Incredibly warm, heated fires
Terrorising the country
Air raid wardens always about
Isolated when bombs explode
Never ending wherever you go
Blazing fires destroy everything
Occurring every night
More and more people dieing
Burning through the crazy blitz
Incredibly our morale is still high
Nazis try to ruin it
Genuine people heartbroken
Searchlights search finding the
Jerries
