UPDATE: Mrs. Turford WON the award! Congratulations!
A teaher from Green Lane Primary Academy has been recognised for her hard work volunteering through the NCT Stars Awards, which celebrate the enthusiasm and dedication of those who dedicate their time and skills to making the charity’s services available to parents and parents-to-be across theUK.
Bryony Turford from NCT Selby Branch has been shortlisted in the Most Supportive Volunteer category.
Bryony has approached her role as membership secretary with dedication, welcoming each new member with a personal letter, event timetable and newsletter. She also set up a Bumps Takeaway group in her own home for expectant couples, attends local antenatal classes to explain what the branch can offer after their arrival, and expanded the programme of events to reach more parents with adult nights out and monthly family events. One fellow volunteer calls her “a driving force who keeps the whole branch team motivated”.
Bryony said: “I am delighted that NCT Selby branch has been shortlisted for this award. It means a lot that the great work the fantastic volunteers are doing has been recognised. The people I have come into contact with in the last 2 years are amazing, so supportive, enthusiastic and so keen to make a difference to the new parents of this rural branch. Volunteering alongside them is a great honour and I am looking forward to representing them all at the House of Lords on 26th October!
A high volume of nominations were received from NCT’s 100,000 plus supporters across the country for six different categories representing the range of different roles volunteers take on for the charity.
NCT has over 10,000 volunteers who give their time, energy and skills in more than 300 branches through a wide range of roles: providing support for parents, co-ordinating branch activities, fundraising, editing newsletters and much more.
The NCT Stars Awards, sponsored by Pampers, will be awarded at a special event at the House of Lords on 26 October to celebrate the European Year of the Volunteer.
Sue Saxey, President of NCT and a long-standing volunteer herself, will be presenting the awards. She said: “NCT Stars Awards are a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of our hard-working, creative and committed volunteers. All our volunteers make a huge difference to the charity’s work, providing a much-needed support network for local parents, and we would not be able to reach as far and wide as we do without them. We hope their success will encourage others to give volunteering a try!”
If you would like to find out more about volunteering at your local NCT branch, contact selbynct@gmail.com, search for Selby NCT on facebook or call us on 0844 243 6257. Alternatively, call the NCT enquiry line on 0300 330 0770.

Press Release
A Garforth, Leeds school is one of the first
teaching schools in the country
A school in Garforth, Leeds has become one of the first in the country to be selected for an important new role aimed at further raising standards.
Green Lane Primary Academy is one of only 100 schools in England to be granted teaching school status – a new designation entitling it to lead the training and professional development for staff.
It was selected by the National College for School Leadership which had about 1,200 expressions of interest in the first recruitment round. Staff from the school will now be invited to the National College’s Learning and Conference Centre in Nottingham in September for a formal induction.
The milestone marks a shift towards school-centred training and development. Teaching schools will be responsible for leading a group of schools, working with other partners including at least one university, to deliver high quality support for teachers and leaders at all stages in their career.
Tammie Prince, Principal said: “This is an exciting opportunity for Green Lane Primary Academy and the School Partnership Trust group of schools. We look forward to being able to work with other academies and schools to develop quality educators for the good of all children.”
The National College has responsibility for the designation and quality of the teaching schools programme, working closely with the Department for Education (DfE) and Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) as the national network grows to 500 teaching schools by 2014.
Sir Paul Edwards, CEO of the School Partnership Trust, said: “The School Partnership Trust are delighted one of its Academies has achieved Teaching School Status. This recognises the expertise in Green Lane Primary Academy and will provide a unique opportunity for Trainees to have access to a wide range of high quality of learning situations across the SPT group of schools and academies.”
Steve Munby, Chief Executive of the National College, said: “To take on this role, teaching schools like Green Lane Primary Academy need to be among the best in the country - outstanding in their own performance and have a track record of raising standards through school-to-school support.”
“Over time teaching schools will harness the finest teaching talent in the profession to drive school improvement, and bring real benefits to pupils. Trainees will learn from the best teachers in action and those who want to step up to more senior leadership positions will be exposed to excellent practice within and beyond their immediate school.”
The first year of the programme will be a design and development phase. As they develop, teaching schools working with other schools and universities will help to provide a strong supply of new teachers, develop leaders and the next generation of heads, and support schools in challenging circumstances.
On Friday 8th July, GLPA competed against 5 other local primary schools in the Inter-Schools Sports Day held at Garfroth Academy. WELL DONE GLPA!
A big thank you to all the adults who supported the children in this event.
GLPA believes in developing the whole child and knows that not all children have interest and talents for the same activities. It is because of this ethos that we work hard at providing a variety of activities above and beyond the national curriculum. Some of these activities are completely academy based. However, many involve a wider group that includes other Garforth schools, Outer East Family of Schools and Leeds schools. These activities take a lot of extra time and effort that goes above the remit of an academy day and we are very grateful to have a dedicated staff and other outside volunteers who give freely of their time to organise and sponsor these activities.
Below is a list that includes many of the extra activities that GLPA has participated in during the 2010-2011 academic year.

A team of 25 children, boys and girls, from Years 5 & 6 have trained twice a day every day since the beginning of September for the indoor athletics competitions. The team won and were able to compete in the Leeds City Final as one of the best four teams in the city. Special thanks goes to Mr. Wheelwright the coach and to the parents for their support of the team.
Congratulations and Good Luck!

Again, we hope that 2011 is a GREAT year for everyone!
Special THANK YOUS go to those staff and parents who have helped with the clearing of paths this week. A VERY special Thank You goes to our Site Supervisor, Mr. D. Grimshaw for his tireless efforts in keeping the paths cleared.
Thank you to ALL the staff and parents for your support and understanding during this snowy weather!
In the event of severe weather conditions, or indeed any other emergency, we may need to close the academy. This is a decision that can often only be made early in the morning.
In making this decision there is a need to balance the health and safety risks of students making hazardous journeys and number of staff that can actually get to work, against the loss of a school day.
When a decision is made, we will post a message on the first page of the academy website (www.glpa.org.uk) to notify you either of a closure or that we are open. You can also listen to the following radio stations: Radio Leeds 92.4 FM/95.3 FM (http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/leeds/hi/tv_and_radio/) or Radio Aire 96.3 FM (http://www.radioaire.co.uk/) . On most occasions, a text message will also be sent out to all parents by Groupcall.
The above are the quickest ways to find out if the academy will be closed. Please do not ring the academy office unless to report an absence.
Mrs. Prince was invited to No. 10 Downing Street for a reception with the Prime Minister, David Cameron, and the Secretary of Education, Micheal Goves.
The reception was to celebrate the opening of Outstanding schools converting to Academy status this year.
The PM said:
“Improving education is central to our reform agenda and we are committed to giving Governors, head teachers and teachers more control over how they run their schools. We know they are best placed to decide how to give their pupils the best possible education and that is why we are encouraging more schools to become academies.
“Many more schools will now be able to become academies and I am pleased they will be able to enjoy the additional freedoms, responsibility and empowerment that comes with academy status.”
Mrs Prince said:
"I am delighted to have been invited to Downing Street. Green Lane Primary Academy is an amazing place to work because of the children and staff within it's walls. This is the next chapter in it's history and I am very happy that I get to be a part of this new era in education."

Did You Know?
In Parent Partnership, 158 parents attended 11 recent Stay & Play/Stay & Learn Sessions put on by the classes. The sessions were to help parents gain insight into teaching and learning occurs at Green Lane while also giving parents the opportunity to participate in a learning activity together. The sessions were a great success. 65 parents answered the survey afterwards. 100% of the parents agreed that the sessions gave them and opportunity to be part of their child’s learning activities, 100% agreed that the sessions were a good opportunity for them to be actively involved in their child’s learning and 100% felt that the sessions gave them greater insight into how their children are taught and how they learn at Green Lane.
When parents were asked what they liked best about the sessions, some of the responses were:
“Getting involved and helping the children learn new skills. It was also a good opportunity to get to know the teacher better.”
“I enjoyed taking part in the activities with my little boy and also to get an insight as to what he does when he is at school.”
“Interacting with the children and getting an insight into the way our children are taught these days, it has changed so much.”
We will be continuing Stay & Play/Stay & Learning Sessions at the beginning of next school year. During the Spring and Summer terms, teachers will be offering workshops on various aspects of learning for different ages so that parents are better able to support their children at home.
This morning, Green Lane Primary Academy was officially opened in a ribbon cutting ceremony that included Cllr Patrick Davey, Deputy Lord Mayor, and the Academy Council. The ceremony included a welcome from Mrs. Prince, Principal, speech by the Deputy Lord Mayor, a history that had been researched and written by Chestnut class, a song "I Have a Song to Sing" and, finally, the ribbon cutting. The event was attended by past Headteachers, Deputy Headteachers and Chairs of Governors and members of the School Partnership Trust Academies and the Garforth School Partnership Trust. Coffee, tea and cake was served to all the special guest at a reception hosted by the Academy Council and every child in the school received a piece of cake, keeping with historical tradition, special certificates and special school badges.
The day was documented by Green Lane's own media crew who are working to put together a special DVD production.
